The Royal Villa, or “Home on the Hill” of H.R.H. the Princess Mother, was built in 1988 when she initiated the Doi Tung Development Project, using her private funds and with the cooperation of the government and the private sector. Built in a style combining that of a Swiss chalet with Lanna (northern Thai) architecture, it is decorated with folk wood carving of the local artisans. The simple interior design exudes elegance with functionally, reflecting the character of the owner. An interesting mix of art and science can be seen throughout the Villa, especially on the ceiling of the main hall. The balconies are decorated with brightly colored flowers, while the beautiful gardens in the front of the Villa overlook the panoramic views of Mae Chan and even as far as Chiang Saen district, the Mekong River and the mountain in Laos.
