Almost 30 years ago, the MFLF introduced coffee as an alternative crop on Doi Tung. It was a case of killing two birds with one stone: coffee was an economic crop that would bring a good income to the local villagers, and since coffee plants grew under the shade of larger trees, it helped to preserve forest cover.
Doi Tung coffee is special for its high altitude and the selected varieties which were developed by the MFLF. Every step of coffee processing was meticulously analysed to achieve the best quality possible.

The MFLF also worked with experts such as Mr. Jose Kawashima, known as the Coffee Hunter and President of the Sustainable Coffee Association of Japan, and coffee roasting expert Mr. Tomohiro Ishiwaki.

As a result, our coffee processing has been fine-tuned, with our coffee beans achieving the “Specialty” grade.
