โรงทอผ้าของมูลนิธิแม่ฟ้าหลวงฯ มีมาตั้งแต่ปี 2536 โดยแรกเริ่มมีคนทอผ้าเพียง 7 คนเท่านั้น ถ้าหากย้อนกลับไปในสมัยเริ่มโครงการพัฒนาดอยตุงฯ คนส่วนใหญ่จะใช้แรงงานในการทำไร่ ทำสวน ปลูกป่า อาสาสมัครส่วนมากที่เข้าร่วมจึงเป็นผู้ชาย การก่อตั้งโรงทอผ้าขึ้นมาจึงเปรียบเสมือนการสร้างการมีส่วนร่วมให้กับผู้หญิงทุกวัย
