Bangkok Forum on Well-Being and Sustainable Development at UN Conference Centre
Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage (MFLF) honorably invited Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, and Professor Enrico Giovannini, Chairman of the UN Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development, to be the keynote speakers for the Bangkok Forum on Well-Being and Sustainable Development held at the United Nations Conference Centre on 25 June 2015.
The event marks a collaboration between the Foundation and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for a path towards a more sustainable future economically, socially, and environmentally congruent to Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.
MFLF, established by HRH Princess Mother, has been practicing and implementing sustainable development in people’s livelihood for almost 40 years. Its practices were praised by Ms. Akhtar. “I would like to especially commend the Foundation for its impressive work in implementing integrated rural development projects in Northern Thailand, which has dramatically reduced the production of opium harvests through crop substitution. The tremendous benefits for the hill tribe communities, in terms of improved health, education and economic outcomes, are a testament to the success of an integrated approach to sustainable development,” Ms. Akhtar commented.
Below are Ms. Akhtar’s keynote statement and Mr. Giovannini’s presentation from the Forum.
