Dr. Sandro Calvani, Senior Advisor on Strategic Planning of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, attended the "Asia Pacific Business Forum (APBF): Regional Integration to Achieve Sustainable Development" organized by ESCAP, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Bangladesh Ministry of Commerce from 8-9 February 2019, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The APBF is a UNESCAP-initiated annual forum taking place in different Asia Pacific countries to provide a platform for regional public-private sector dialogue on the role of businesses in achieving sustainable development and assessments of future trends and opportunities. Given the private sector contributes 60-80% of GDP of most countries in the region, the role of private sector in sustainable business practices, investments, capacity building, innovations, technological advances, and taking the lead in key areas such as sustainable agriculture, alternative energy, sustainable
tourism are critical in realizing sustainable and equitable growth.
Dr. Sandro spoke at the plenary session "Supporting and Empowering Disadvantaged MSMEs to Become More Competitive and Sustainable", which emphasized the importance of MSMEs as a key engine in fostering sustainable development in developing countries. Dr. Sandro presented the case of DoiTung as a successful social enterprise and MSME; its impact on social, economic, environmental, and cultural transformation of previously marginalized communities; the potential of people and communities to progress, innovate, and drive change; the importance of partnerships that will enhance knowledge, skills, and ethical values.
