International Internship Program 2017

Who are we?

The Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage (MFLF) founded in 1972 by Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra (The late mother of the present King of Thailand) is a Thai non-profit organization working in sustainable development to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life of the people regardless of race, religion and gender. We empower the people to be economically, socially resilient and self-reliant; while fostering co-existence between man and nature. The Foundation has several development projects in Thailand and internationally—Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Indonesia—with the Doi Tung Development Project (DTDP) in Northern Thailand being the model project.

The Doi Tung Development Project (DTDP) was established in 1988 on Doi Tung, a high mountain in Chiang Rai province, covering approximately 150 square kilometers which was once a secluded area in the heart of the Golden Triangle—the world's largest opium-producing region. Recognizing that the root causes of such problems were poverty and lack of opportunity, the Princess Mother decided to improve the conditions of Doi Tung, socially, economically, and environmentally by introducing alternative legitimate livelihoods; ranging from reforestation jobs, economic crops cultivation, horticulture, handicrafts, and hospitality, all based upon local wisdom and capacity of the community, with an emphasis on value adding process and zero-waste management.

 Our Living University

The Foundation aspires to spread our guiding principles and best practices from over 40 years of experience through the “Living University”. We welcome study visitors and interns from all corners of the world to learn beyond textbooks and from “local scholars” at our campuses--our ongoing development areas.

Our international internship program fosters firsthand experience through direct exposure to Sustainable Development, cross-cultural immersion, and hill tribe ways of life. We have received around a hundred interns from world-renowned universities in several countries such as Harvard University, Columbia University, University of Cambridge, Carnegie Mellon University, Rhode Island School of Design, the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po - Paris), University for Peace, Cornell University, as well as prominent universities in Thailand, namely Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Mahidol, and Srinakharinwirot.

More than 40 years of MFLF journey and with lessons learned from our many projects in and outside of Thailand, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation has a robust story to tell. Our development principles have been successfully replicated in different sites regardless of races, religions, and backgrounds. We are positive that our best practices and lessons learned—if communicated clearly and effectively—are personally inspiring if not universally applicable to make the world a better place.

Doi Tung Development Project is one of our flagship projects where opium cultivation in the heart of the once notorious “Golden Triangle” had been eliminated using an approach called Sustainable Alternative Livelihood Development (SALD). People’s lives have been uplifted. They become skilled artisans, agriculturists, service providers and social entrepreneurs who produce world class goods and services. People of Doi Tung are now live legitimate and dignified lives, harmoniously with nature.

We are looking for students with Film, Multimedia, and Communication background to produce two documentary films portraying the Mae Fah Luang Foundation’s development principles, process, and success stories. The interns will be responsible for the conception, planning, designing, and execution of visual solutions.
